LadTV is one of the applications I wrote in my spare time for the new Apple TV. At the end of 2015 Apple released the first Apple TV to have an App Store, with this it released a framework called TVOS which enables developers to build apps using something called a Focus Engine. The Focus Engine allows user interface components to be ‘focussed’ which is useful given the only way to navigate around the application is to use the new Siri remote which is bundled with the Apple TV.
Given this new framework and the new technologies involved I was very keen to write an application supporting the new hardware. LadTV started as a sideline project and allows users to browse some of the popular trending viral videos from across the internet.
The app uses some custom UI like the floating channel list which automatically slides down from the top of the screen when it’s about to be focussed but seamlessly slides away when not in use, leaving the full screen to browse the list of videos.
I had a lot of fun building this app and have made it available for free on the TVOS App Store.
